ISO 9000 is a set of standards for Quality Management Systems overseeing the production of a product or services. ISO 9000 was originally created by the British standard Institute as BS 5750, but is now maintained by the ISO, or International Organization for Standardization. The ISO’s purpose is to facilitate international trade by creating a single set of quality standards that can be recognized worldwide. Today, ISO 9000 standards are used by thousands of companies around the world, and more than 90 counties have accepted ISO 9000 standards as their national standard.

ISO 9000 is a generic standard, which means that the same standards can be applied to any company wishing to create a quality management system, whether it is large or small, for-profit or governmental, whatever the product or service. ISO 9000 standards focus on a number of principles, including a focus on the customer, sound leadership practices, involvement of people at all levels, a process approach, a systematic approach to management, continual improvement, a factual approach to decision making, and mutually beneficial supplier relationships.
